The 28-Star Flag (1845–1847) — The Flag of Texas Statehood & the Start of the Mexican-American War

When Texas was admitted to the Union on December 29, 1845, a 28th star was added to the US flag. The 28-Star Flag became official on July 4, 1846 — the same year the Mexican-American War began. This was the flag flying over US forces when war was declared on Mexico in May 1846, and when American troops won the opening battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma along the Rio Grande.

The 28-star flag served as the official US flag for just one year (1846–1847), until Iowa's admission brought the 29-star flag on July 4, 1847. It is one of the rarest and most historically significant star patterns in American history — the flag under which the Mexican-American War began.

(Note: Some actual flags carried by U.S. troops during the early Mexican-American War campaign were still 27-star versions made earlier, but the official design when war was declared is 28 stars.)
