The 29-Star Flag — The Flag of the Mexican-American War

On July 4, 1847, the United States officially raised a new flag — 29 stars, with one added for Iowa's admission to the Union on December 28, 1846. This was the flag flying over American troops as they marched into Mexico City in September 1847, the decisive moment of the Mexican-American War.

On September 14, 1847, US Marines and Army troops stormed Chapultepec Castle and captured the National Palace of Mexico — the "Halls of Montezuma" immortalized in the Marines' Hymn. As General Winfield Scott rode into the Grand Plaza, the 29-Star Flag was raised over the seat of Mexican government, marking the effective end of the war.

(Note: Some actual flags carried by U.S. troops during the Mexican-American War campaign were still 28-star versions made earlier, but the official design on the date shown is 29 stars.)

The Officers Who Were There — Future Legends of the Civil War

The Mexican-American War was a proving ground for a generation of officers who would go on to command armies on both sides of the Civil War. Among those who served under this very flag:

  • Ulysses S. Grant — Brevet 1st Lieutenant, later General-in-Chief of the Union Army and 18th President
  • Robert E. Lee — Captain of Engineers on General Scott's staff, called "the very best soldier I ever saw in the field" by Scott; later General of the Confederate Army
  • Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson — 2nd Lieutenant, distinguished himself at Chapultepec; later Confederate General
  • George McClellan — Brevet Captain, later Union General-in-Chief
  • George Meade — Lieutenant, later Union commander at Gettysburg
  • James Longstreet — Lieutenant, wounded at Chapultepec; later Confederate General
  • George Pickett — 1st Lieutenant, first to scale the walls at Chapultepec; later Confederate General famous for Pickett's Charge
  • P.G.T. Beauregard — Captain of Engineers; later Confederate General who fired the first shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter
  • Joseph Johnston — Captain, wounded at Chapultepec; later Confederate General
  • Braxton Bragg — Captain of Artillery; later Confederate General

This flag witnessed the birth of a generation of military leaders who would shape American history for decades to come.

It served as the official US flag for just one year, making it one of the rarest and most historically significant star patterns in American history. The only President to serve under this flag was James K. Polk (1845–1849).
