A Property Manager’s Guide to Flagpole Parts
Commercial flagpoles are built from several working components. When one part wears out, the entire system can become difficult or unsafe to operate. Knowing the basic parts helps managers order the correct replacements and keep the flag flying properly.

Main Flagpole Components
- Flagpole shaft — tapered aluminum pole body
- Ball ornament — decorative top finial
- Truck — top assembly holding pulley and ornament
- Pulley — guides the halyard
- Halyard — rope used to raise and lower the flag
- Cleat — ties off external halyard rope
- Flag snaps — attach flag to halyard
- Snap covers — protect pole and flag from wear
- Flash collar — decorative base cover
- Foundation sleeve — in-ground support system
- Anchor bolts — used for shoe base installations
- American flag — properly sized for pole height
Internal vs. External Halyard Systems
External Halyard Flagpoles
External halyard poles use rope on the outside of the pole. The rope is secured to a cleat after the flag is raised.
Best for: homes, businesses, schools, churches, and general commercial use.
Internal Halyard Flagpoles
Internal halyard poles keep the rope or cable inside the flagpole, improving security and creating a cleaner appearance.
Best for: government buildings, public spaces, schools, and high-visibility sites.
Flagpole Trucks, Pulleys & Halyards
The truck, pulley, and halyard must work together. The pulley diameter and truck design determine the proper rope size. Installing rope that is too large can cause binding, premature wear, or failure to raise and lower the flag smoothly.
| Halyard Size | Common Use | Manager’s Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4" | Smaller residential and light commercial poles | Use only where truck and pulley allow 1/4" rope |
| 5/16" | Most commercial external and internal halyard systems | Common size for many commercial flagpole trucks |
| 3/8" | Heavy-duty and larger flagpole systems | Used only with trucks designed for larger rope |
Manager’s Tip
We recommend ordering halyard at approximately twice the height of your flagpole. A 30' flagpole usually requires about 60' of halyard.

The most common commercial flagpole installation uses an in-ground foundation sleeve. As a general rule, approximately one foot of the flagpole should be encased in the sleeve for every ten feet of exposed flagpole height.
| Exposed Pole Height | Typical Sleeve Depth | Recommended Flag Size |
|---|---|---|
| 20 ft | 2 ft | 3' x 5' |
| 25 ft | 2.5 ft | 4' x 6' |
| 30 ft | 3 ft | 5' x 8' |
| 40 ft | 4 ft | 6' x 10' |
| 50 ft | 5 ft | 8' x 12' |
For traditional in-ground installations, see our galvanized steel foundation sleeves with support plate, grounding spike, and centering structure. For smaller compatible poles, see our PVC ground sleeves.
For shoe base installations, galvanized anchor bolts are used to mount the pole to a concrete base. Shoe bases may be stationary or tilting, but they can reduce the wind rating of the flagpole and may not be available on hurricane-rated series poles.
Compare tilting shoe bases and stationary shoe bases before selecting your installation method.
Flash Collars
A flash collar is the decorative base trim that hides the concrete foundation and ground sleeve. It gives the finished flagpole installation a cleaner, more professional appearance.
When to Use a Split Flash Collar
A split flash collar is useful when replacing or adding a collar to an already-installed flagpole. Because it is made in two pieces, it can be installed without removing the pole from the foundation sleeve.
Hurricane Rated Flagpoles
For Florida, coastal properties, and high-wind areas, hurricane-rated flagpoles are often the best choice. These poles are engineered for stronger wind loads and are appropriate for many commercial, municipal, and waterfront installations.
When selecting a hurricane flagpole, consider pole height, wall thickness, butt diameter, flag size, soil conditions, exposure, and whether the pole will fly a flag during severe weather.
