The 29-Star Flag (1847–1848) — The Flag of the Mexican-American War

On July 4, 1847, the United States officially raised a new flag — 29 stars, with one added for Iowa's admission to the Union on December 28, 1846. This was the flag flying over American troops as they marched into Mexico City in September 1847, the decisive moment of the Mexican-American War.

On September 14, 1847, US Marines and Army troops stormed Chapultepec Castle and captured the National Palace of Mexico — the "Halls of Montezuma" immortalized in the Marines' Hymn. As General Winfield Scott rode into the Grand Plaza, the 29-Star Flag was raised over the seat of Mexican government, marking the effective end of the war. It served as the official US flag for just one year (1847–1848) — one of the rarest star patterns in American history. The only President to serve under this flag was James K. Polk (1845–1849).
