The 24-Star Flag (1822–1836) — Missouri Statehood & the Era of Good Feelings

When Missouri was admitted to the Union on August 10, 1821, a 24th star was added to the US flag. The 24-Star Flag became official on July 4, 1822 and served for an unusually long 14 years — the longest run of any flag between the 20-star and 50-star versions — because no new states were admitted until Arkansas in 1836.

This was the flag of the Era of Good Feelings — the period of relative political unity and national optimism following the War of 1812. It flew under three presidents: James Monroe (who completed his second term under this flag), John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson during his first term. It was the flag of the Missouri Compromise era, the Monroe Doctrine (1823), and the opening of the Erie Canal (1825).

The 24-star flag also flew during the Marquis de Lafayette’s farewell tour of America in 1824–25 — the last surviving general of the Revolutionary War’s triumphant return to the nation he helped found.
