The Old Minnesota Flag was adopted in 1957 and remained the state's official flag until Minnesota adopted a new design in 2024. Its historic design features the state seal on a royal-blue field, surrounded by 19 stars representing Minnesota's place as the 19th state admitted to the Union. The motto L'Etoile du Nord, meaning “Star of the North,” reflects Minnesota's identity and northern heritage.
