The Historical Minnesota State Flag
The Minnesota state flag adopted in 1957 remained the official state flag through 2023. Its historic design features the state seal on a royal-blue field, surrounded by 19 stars representing Minnesota's place as the 19th state admitted to the Union. The motto L'Etoile du Nord, meaning “Star of the North,” reflects Minnesota's identity and northern heritage.
The earlier Minnesota flag design is used for state-history exhibits, archives, classrooms, museums, historic properties, period settings, collectors, former-state-flag displays, and patriotic presentations. It is the former Minnesota state flag, not the current 2024 design.
