General Fremont Flag – A Piece of American Exploration History
When John C. Frémont led his legendary expeditions into the uncharted American West (1845–1848), he carried a flag unlike any other. His wife Jessie designed it specifically for his missions — blending the Stars and Stripes with U.S. Army regimental colors, 26 stars, and an eagle clutching arrows and a peace pipe (a symbol of peaceful intent more recognizable to Native Americans than the olive branch). It flew over territory claimed by Mexico during the Mexican-American War, through the Bear Flag Revolt, and into the Civil War. Frémont himself became the first Republican Party candidate for President of the United States.
