The Story Behind the Flag
In October 1775, Colonel Joseph Reed wrote to General Washington: "What do you think of a flag with a white ground and a tree in the middle, the motto ‘AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN’ — this is the flag of our floating batteries." Washington’s men were outnumbered and outgunned, yet they hoisted this flag as a declaration that no earthly power could extinguish God-given liberty. By April 1776 the Massachusetts council had made it official — a white flag, a green pine tree, and the inscription: An Appeal to Heaven.
