Historical Background
This flag traces its origins to September 1775, when General George Washington commissioned armed vessels to challenge the British Navy in Boston Harbor. Colonel Joseph Reed, Washington’s military secretary, wrote on October 20th: “What do you think of a flag with a white ground and a tree in the middle, the motto ‘AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN’ — this is the flag of our floating batteries.”
By April 1776, the Massachusetts Council formalized the design: a white flag with a green pine tree and the inscription An Appeal to Heaven — a variation of the New England Pine Tree flag flown by Washington’s Cruisers. The flag has seen a modern revival through Christian prayer rallies and leaders like Dutch Sheets.
