About the Guam Territorial Flag
The flag of the U.S. Territory of Guam was adopted on July 4th, 1917, with the distinctive red border added in 1948. The deep blue field represents the Pacific Ocean. The central seal is shaped like a traditional Chamorro sling stone — called a potta — a symbol of strength and protection, and features a classic landscape of Guam. The lone coconut tree depicted survived a devastating typhoon in 1918 and stands as an enduring symbol of courage, resilience, and usefulness to the Chamorro people.
