The Cowpens Flag — 3rd Maryland Regiment, Battle of Cowpens (1781)

The Cowpens Flag, also known as the 3rd Maryland Regiment Flag, is one of the oldest surviving American flags and one of the most historically significant regimental colors of the Revolutionary War. It was carried by the 3rd Maryland Regiment at the Battle of Cowpens on January 17, 1781 — one of the most decisive American victories of the entire war.

At Cowpens, Brigadier General Daniel Morgan executed a brilliant double-envelopment of British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton’s force, destroying nearly the entire British Legion in under an hour. The battle was a turning point in the Southern Campaign, directly leading to Cornwallis’s fateful march north to Yorktown and the effective end of British power in the South.

The flag itself is a 13-star design — an early version of the Stars and Stripes — with a distinctive star arrangement that predates the standardized Betsy Ross circular pattern. The original is considered a national treasure and is preserved as one of the earliest physical examples of the American flag carried in battle.

The 3rd Maryland was part of the Continental Army’s Maryland Line, widely regarded as among the finest Continental infantry. Maryland troops had already saved the Continental Army at the Battle of Long Island in 1776, buying Washington’s retreat with a heroic rear-guard action. At Cowpens, they helped deliver the knockout blow.
