17th Tennessee Infantry Regiment — Civil War Regimental Flag
The 17th Tennessee Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee in June 1861, mustered into Confederate service for the duration of the war. The regiment served throughout the Western Theater, seeing action at some of the most brutal engagements of the Civil War.
The 17th Tennessee fought at Shiloh (April 1862), Perryville (October 1862), Murfreesboro/Stones River (December 1862–January 1863), and the grinding campaign at Chickamauga (September 1863) — one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The regiment continued through the Atlanta Campaign and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign before the war’s end. It surrendered just 5 officers and 63 men on April 9, 1865 — a testament to the devastating attrition the regiment endured over four years of hard fighting.
