The Volunteer State
Tennessee — the Volunteer State — earned its nickname from the overwhelming number of volunteers who answered the call during the War of 1812 and later conflicts. Home to Nashville, Memphis, and the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee has a rich heritage spanning frontier history, the Civil War, and the birthplace of American country music and blues. It was the 16th state admitted to the Union on June 1, 1796.
About the Tennessee Flag
The Tennessee State Flag, designed by LeRoy Reeves of the Third Tennessee Infantry and adopted in 1905, features a crimson field with a blue circle containing three white stars. The three stars represent the three Grand Divisions of Tennessee — East, Middle, and West. The blue circle symbolizes the unity of the three divisions. A vertical blue stripe at the fly edge is separated from the field by a narrow white stripe.
