This is the Star-Spangled Banner — the 15-star, 15-stripe flag design that flew over Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore on the night of September 13–14, 1814, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became the United States national anthem.
The 15-star, 15-stripe flag was adopted on May 1, 1795 following the admission of Vermont and Kentucky to the Union. It was the only US flag ever to have more than 13 stripes — Congress originally intended to add a star and a stripe for each new state, but the Flag Act of 1818 fixed the stripes permanently at 13. This flag served for 23 years through the presidencies of Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe, and was the flag of the United States during the entire War of 1812.
At dawn on September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key saw the garrison flag — a 30x42 foot 15-star flag sewn by Mary Pickersgill — still flying over Fort McHenry after 25 hours of British bombardment. His poem became The Star-Spangled Banner, adopted as the national anthem by Congress in 1931. The original flag is preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
