The Star-Spangled Banner — 15 Stars, 15 Stripes — Nylon Appliqué Cut & Sewn

This is the Star-Spangled Banner — the actual flag design that flew over Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore on the night of September 13–14, 1814, and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became the United States national anthem.

The 15-star, 15-stripe flag was adopted on May 1, 1795 following the admission of Vermont (1791) and Kentucky (1792) to the Union. It was the only US flag to have more than 13 stripes — Congress had originally intended to add both a star and a stripe for each new state, but the rapid growth of the nation made this impractical, and the Flag Act of 1818 returned the flag to 13 stripes permanently.

The 15-stripe flag served for 23 years — through the presidencies of Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe — and was the flag of the United States during the War of 1812, the burning of Washington D.C., and the pivotal American victory at Baltimore that stopped the British advance.

The Night That Inspired the National Anthem

On the night of September 13, 1814, British naval forces bombarded Fort McHenry for 25 hours in an attempt to take Baltimore and break American resistance. Francis Scott Key, a Washington lawyer detained aboard a British ship during the bombardment, watched through the night as the fort held. At dawn on September 14, he saw the 30x42 foot garrison flag — a 15-star, 15-stripe flag made by Mary Pickersgill — still flying over the fort.

Key wrote the poem Defence of Fort M’Henry that morning, set to the tune of a popular British song. It was renamed The Star-Spangled Banner and became the official national anthem of the United States by act of Congress in 1931. The original flag survives today and is on permanent display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
