North Carolina — the Tar Heel State — holds a unique place in American history as the site of the first English settlement in the New World and the birthplace of powered flight at Kitty Hawk. Its state flag traces its origins to the Civil War era, when delegates to the 1861 constitutional convention established a committee to design a flag upon voting to join the Confederacy. The design was ratified on June 22, 1861, and evolved into the proud banner flown today, adopted in its current form in 1885.
About the North Carolina Flag
The North Carolina State Flag features a blue union on the left bearing a white star with the letter "N" in gilt to the left and "C" to the right. Above the star is the date May 20, 1775 (the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence) and below it May 20, 1861 (the date North Carolina seceded). The fly side consists of two equal horizontal bars — red on top and white on bottom.
