The Story Behind the Alaska Flag
In 1927, 13-year-old Benny Benson won a contest to design the territorial flag. He described the blue field as Alaska’s sky and forget-me-not flower, the Big Dipper as a symbol of strength, and the North Star as a guide to Alaska’s future. The design preceded Alaska’s 1959 statehood.
