About the Whiskey Rebellion Flags
In 1794, western Pennsylvania farmers rose up against the federal excise tax on whiskey — the young nation’s first major domestic insurrection. The so-called Whiskey Rebels made use of several distinct flags during the rebellion:
- The Liberty Pole Flag — A simple white flag with red stripes, typically hung from a liberty pole as a rallying symbol. The most commonly used flag during the uprising.
- The Inscription Flag — Bearing the motto “Equal Taxation and no Excise – No Asylum for Traitors and Cowards.” A direct statement of the rebels’ grievances against the federal government.
- The Eagle and Stars Flag — The most elaborate design, featuring an eagle holding a ribbon in its beak with thirteen six-pointed stars scattered across the field. This post-Revolutionary Federalist design is now most commonly associated with the Whiskey Rebellion, though historians note it may have had closer ties to the Federal Army than to the rebels themselves.
President Washington personally led troops to suppress the rebellion — the only time a sitting U.S. president has commanded troops in the field — making these flags a unique artifact of early American constitutional history.
