About the USPHS
The United States Public Health Service traces its origins to 1798, when Congress established a system of marine hospitals to care for sick and disabled sailors. Reorganized as the Marine Hospital Service in 1870, it was renamed the Public Health Service in 1912. The Public Health Service Act of 1944 established its current legal framework. Today the USPHS Commissioned Corps deploys officers — physicians, nurses, scientists, and other health professionals — wherever the nation needs them most.
