About the Ohio Flag
The Ohio state flag was adopted on May 9, 1902 — and it’s unlike any other state flag in the country. Known as a burgee (a swallowtail pennant shape), it was designed by architect John Eisemann and modeled after the guidons carried by Ohio cavalry units in the Civil War.
- The large blue triangle represents Ohio’s hills and valleys
- The red and white stripes represent roads and waterways
- The 17 stars honor Ohio as the 17th state admitted to the Union
- The O in the white circle stands for Ohio — and doubles as the state’s nickname: the Buckeye
