The Palmetto State
South Carolina holds a proud place in American history as one of the original thirteen colonies. Its flag's symbols recall Colonel William Moultrie's troops and their defense of Fort Sullivan. The fort's palmetto-log walls famously absorbed British cannon fire, helping establish the palmetto as a symbol of resilience.
About the South Carolina Flag
The design features a white palmetto tree on a blue field with a white crescent in the upper left canton, at the flagstaff end. The crescent recalls the silver cap insignia worn by Moultrie's troops, while the blue recalls their uniforms. The palmetto tree was added to the state flag in 1861.
