The Navajo Nation Flag is more than a banner — it is a sacred map, a creation story, and a declaration of sovereignty woven into a single design. Created in 1968 by student Jay DeGroat and inspired by the ancient art of sand painting, this flag has proudly represented the Diné people for over five decades.
The Land: Diné Bikéyah
At the heart of the flag lies a map of Navajoland — Diné Bikéyah — a 27,000-square-mile homeland spanning the Four Corners region of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. A copper border traces this sovereign territory, home to more than 250,000 Navajo people. A darker rectangle within represents the original land allocated to the Diné under the 1868 Treaty with the U.S. government.
The Four Sacred Mountains
Four mountains mark the cardinal directions of the ancestral homeland, each tied to a sacred color, a holy woman, and a stone from the creation story:
- North — Hesperus Peak (Dibé Ntsaa) — Black / Jet — ruled by Jet Black Woman, guardian of the night
- East — Blanca Peak (Tsisnaajini) — White / White Shell — ruled by White-Shell Woman, representing the dawn
- South — Mount Taylor (Tsoodzil) — Blue / Turquoise — ruled by Turquoise Woman, commanding the daylight
- West — San Francisco Peaks (Dook'o'oosliid) — Yellow / Abalone — ruled by Abalone Woman, overseeing the setting sun
The Rainbow: Protection and Pathway
A vivid arc of red, yellow, and blue sweeps over the land — open at the bottom, never closing, as a symbol of the Navajo people's enduring independence. In Navajo tradition, the rainbow is the pathway of the Yeis, healing holy spirits who intercede between the Creator and humanity. It also echoes the sacred redstone arches found across Navajoland, from Rainbow Bridge in Utah to Window Rock, Arizona.
The Great Seal
At the center, a white circle carries the symbols of the 1952 Great Seal:
- The Sun Father, sacred at both rising and setting
- Two cornstalks with yellow pollen tips — representing fertility, sustenance, and healing
- A traditional hogan and a modern home, flanking an oil derrick — honoring both heritage and economic resilience
