📖 About the Maryland State Flag
Maryland’s flag is the only U.S. state flag based on English heraldry. The quartered design combines the black-and-gold colors of the Calvert family — Maryland’s founding dynasty — with the red-and-white cross-bottony of the Crossland family, the maternal line of Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore. During the Civil War, Confederate-leaning Marylanders adopted the Crossland colors as a symbol of resistance, and after the war the full quartered design was embraced as a symbol of reconciliation. It was officially adopted as the state flag in 1904 and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and recognizable state flags in the nation.
