New Mexico officially joined the Union as the 47th state on January 6, 1912. For over a decade following statehood, the land flew an unofficial banner until a highly targeted design contest by the Daughters of the American Revolution resulted in the iconic masterpiece officially introduced in 1925. Designed in 1920 by Dr. Harry Mera, the flag was carefully crafted to highlight the state's deep Native American Pueblo and Nuevo México Hispano roots.
