The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Flag features the iconic light blue field with the official EMS Star of Life seal — a symbol recognized worldwide as the mark of emergency medical care. Made in the USA from durable nylon, this flag is built for outdoor display and is the choice of EMS stations, hospitals, fire departments, and first responder organizations across the country.
The 3x5 ft single-sided flag is a production flag — stocked and ready to ship. All other sizes are made to order and custom produced to your specifications.
History of the EMS Star of Life Seal
The Star of Life was designed in 1973 by Leo R. Schwartz, Chief of the EMS Branch of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It was developed to create a nationally recognized symbol for emergency medical services following the passage of the Emergency Medical Services Systems Act of 1973. The design replaced a previously used orange cross that had created confusion with the International Red Cross symbol. The six-pointed blue star was officially registered as a certification mark by NHTSA and has since become the universal emblem of emergency medical care in the United States and around the world.
Meaning of the EMS Star of Life
Each of the six bars of the Star of Life represents a distinct phase of the EMS mission:
- Detection — First recognition of an emergency by a bystander or first responder
- Reporting — Notification of the appropriate emergency authority
- Response — Dispatch and arrival of emergency medical personnel
- On-Scene Care — Treatment provided at the location of the emergency
- Care in Transit — Continued treatment during transport to a medical facility
- Transfer to Definitive Care — Handoff to hospital or specialized care providers
The serpent and staff at the center of the seal is the Rod of Asclepius, an ancient symbol of medicine and healing dating back to Greek mythology, representing the healing arts and the medical profession.
