The Mexican-American War (1846–1848) was a defining conflict in American history — a war that reshaped the map of North America and forged some of the most distinctive military flags and banners ever carried into battle. From the 29-Star Flag raised over the National Palace of Mexico City to the battle flags of Texas and the banners of early US Army regiments, the flags of this era tell the story of a young nation expanding westward under fire.
Among those who served in this war: future Civil War generals Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, George Pickett, James Longstreet, and P.G.T. Beauregard — officers who would go on to command armies on both sides of the bloodiest conflict in American history.
