Gadsden Flag — Don’t Tread on Me — 100% Made in USA. The original American liberty flag, flown by the Continental Navy in 1776 and the most enduring symbol of American independence. Available in factory-stocked single-sided nylon (12x18” through 6x10’) and made-to-order for larger sizes (8x12 and 10x15 Rope and Thimble) and all double-sided versions.

🏴 Single Sided or Double Sided — Which Is Right for You?
Single Sided (factory stocked, 12x18”–6x10’): The standard choice for virtually all commercial, government, and residential flagpoles. The design prints through to the reverse — reversed and slightly lighter on the back, but fully visible. All commercial flag programs specify single-sided flags.
Double Sided (made to order): Two separate panels sewn together with a liner — reads correctly and at full color from both sides. Ideal for entrance gates, parade routes, or any installation where wind direction varies and both sides must read clearly. Allow additional production time.
The rattlesnake is a symbol of American resilience. This flag features a Spanish yellow background — the same vivid field as Gadsden’s original 1775 design.
Made of our toughest, most durable and long-lasting nylon fabric, with solid brass grommets. You won’t find nylon flags with higher tensile and tear strength, yet they fly very well in the wind. This flag has excellent strength retention under UV exposure, and high resistance to UV fading. The colors are deeper, brighter and last over time. This fabric has better wash-fastness and light-fastness than nylons of similar fabric construction.
There is a one inch double edge fold with four rows of stitching on the fly edge. There is reinforced stitching at the fly corners.
📖 History of the Gadsden Flag
The United States Navy was preceded by the Continental Navy, and this flag is recorded as presented to its first Commander-in-Chief, Commodore Esek Hopkins, as his personal standard. In 1775 Christopher Gadsden was a member of the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress. This committee was responsible for outfitting the ships of the forming Continental Navy, including originating a flag for the navy’s commander-in-chief to fly as his standard from the mainmast of his flagship.
“Col. Gadsden presented to the Congress an elegant standard, such as is to be used by the commander in chief of the American navy; being a yellow field, with a lively representation of a rattle-snake in the middle, in the attitude of going to strike, and these words underneath, ‘DON’T TREAD ON ME!’” — Journal of the South Carolina Provincial Congress, 9 February 1776.
It appears that this flag was flown aboard one of the first ships in the United States Navy, the Alfred, on January 4th, 1776 — making it one of the oldest recorded flags of the United States, well before the Stars and Stripes were adopted in June of 1777. The famed American naval officer John Paul Jones served as First Lieutenant on the Alfred directly under Commodore Hopkins.
Gadsden was a key leader of the South Carolina patriots of the American Revolution, helping in 1765 to found and lead the Sons of Liberty in his state. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress, and rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Continental Army. No armchair patriot, he spent nearly a year in solitary confinement in the dungeon of the old Spanish fort of San Marcos in St. Augustine, sent by British General Cornwallis. Released after the defeat of Cornwallis, Gadsden returned to his duties.
