The familiar circle of stars is widely known today as the Betsy Ross design and has become an enduring symbol of America’s founding. Congress’s June 14, 1777 flag resolution specified thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, but did not prescribe a circle arrangement.
Did Betsy Ross Make the First American Flag?
Betsy Ross was a Philadelphia upholsterer and flag maker who made flags during the Revolutionary era. The famous account of George Washington visiting her and her suggesting five-pointed stars comes from family tradition, publicly presented by her grandson William J. Canby in 1870. Contemporary evidence has not established that she designed or sewed the first United States flag.
