The Haudenosaunee (meaning "People of the Longhouse," historically referred to as the Iroquois Confederacy) of upper New York state and southeastern Canada stands as one of the world’s oldest continuous participatory democracies. Their founding constitution, the Great Law of Peace (Gayanesshagowa), directly inspired the framers of the U.S. Constitution—Benjamin Franklin studied its structural balance of power extensively. According to oral tradition, the Great Law united five historically warring nations under a message of peace brought by the Peacemaker and Hiawatha. In the early 1700s, the Tuscarora joined to form the modern Six Nations.
The flag's powerful design is an exact adaptation of the ancient Hiawatha Wampum Belt, made of purple and white mollusk shell beads. The deep purple field represents the traditional wampum color, while the interconnected geometric shapes map out the original nations from East to West across their native territory:
