This design originated with Colonel William Moultrie’s flag from 1776, which had a blue background with a crescent in the upper corner flagstaff side. The crescent was based on the silver crescent worn on the hats of Moultrie’s troops and was originally positioned with the horns pointing upward . In 1861, the design of the South Carolina state flag was amended to include a palmetto tree, but the position of the crescent remained at the flagstaff end. The flag’s blue color is a nod to the uniforms of the Revolutionary War soldiers, and the palmetto tree symbolizes the palmetto logs used in the construction of Fort Moultrie, which played a crucial role in a Revolutionary War battle . Flag Quality: This flag is made in America of tough, durable and long-lasting nylon fabric, with solid brass grommets. You won't find nylon flags with higher tensile and tear strength. It has excellent strength retention under UV exposure, and high resistance to UV fading. This flag has a one inch double edge fold around the edges, with four rows of stitching on the fly edge where the flag needs the greatest strength. In addition, there is 1 1/2 inch reinforced stitching vertically at the fly corners, and 3 1/2 inch reinforced hem stitching (horizontal) at top and bottom of the fly.
