Buy Confederate Flags Here The Confederate South Carolina Palmetto Guard Flag was used during the Civil War, and was the first flag flown from Fort Sumter after the Union Army withdrew in April of 1861. It was a white flag with a green palm tree and a red star in its corner. The tree is a reference to a fort which was largely constructed of Palmetto logs and situated on Sullivan's Island in Charleston Harbor in 1776. The resilient Palmetto logs are said to have withstood the pounding of British cannon balls during the Revolutionary War and so contributed to the repulse of a British invasion force on June 28, 1776. Soon thereafter, the Palmetto became a central part of South Carolina's Great Seal. Less than three months later, a variation of the palmetto flag unfurled over Fort Sumter on April 14, 1861, the day it was surrendered to Confederate General Beauregard, making it likely the first Confederate flag flown over the fort. The flag consisted of a palmetto on an entirely white background with a red star in the upper left quadrant, and is commonly known as "The Palmetto Guard Flag."
