Centered on the flag are three smaller flags representing the nations that shaped South Africa’s history: the United Kingdom, the Orange Free State, and the South African Republic (Transvaal). The flag was also used in South-West Africa (now Namibia) during the period of South African administration. It remained the official national flag until the end of apartheid and the democratic transition in 1994, when it was replaced by the current rainbow flag.
