The territory of Alaska had no flag of its own, and one was needed. The prize was awarded to John Bell (Benny) Benson, a 13-year old Aleut who lived in an orphanage in Seward. In his submission, Benny said that the “…blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, an Alaskan flower.” Benny also explained that the “…Dipper is for the Great Bear – symbolizing strength.” In the upper right the North Star is shown, “…for the future state of Alaska, the most northerly in the Union." On the flag, Polaris, the North Star, is larger than the stars of the Big Dipper. (Because of sloppy mass production techniques some flags have all the stars the same size.) Flag Quality: This flag is made in America of tough, durable and long-lasting nylon fabric, with solid brass grommets. You won't find nylon flags with higher tensile and tear strength. It has excellent strength retention under UV exposure, and high resistance to UV fading. These are deeper, brighter colors that last over time, due to the aniline dyeing process, with better wash-fastness and light-fastness than nylons of similar fabric construction. This flag has a one inch double edge fold around the edges, with four rows of stitching on the fly edge where the flag needs the greatest strength. In addition, there is 1 1/2 inch reinforced stitching vertically at the fly corners, and 3 1/2 inch reinforced hem stitching (horizontal) at top and bottom of the fly.
