Historical Background Rhodesia was a landlocked nation in southern Africa, occupying the territory now known as Zimbabwe. The country was named after British colonialist Cecil Rhodes and was administered by the British South Africa Company before becoming the self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1923. In November 1965, Prime Minister Ian Smith issued a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from Britain, establishing Rhodesia as an independent state — though it was never internationally recognized. A new national flag was adopted in 1968, featuring the green and white vertical stripes with the national coat of arms, and this flag continued to fly when Rhodesia was declared a republic in 1970. Following years of a guerrilla war known as the Bush War (or Zimbabwe War of Liberation), a peace agreement was reached in 1979. The country transitioned through a brief period as Zimbabwe Rhodesia before achieving internationally recognized independence as Zimbabwe on April 18, 1980. Today, Zimbabwe is home to Victoria Falls, Great Zimbabwe ruins, and a rich cultural heritage spanning the Shona and Ndebele peoples.
